XP, Vista, Win7: automatically creates a temp profile, user profile status is backup

This normally occurs for computers connected to a domain controller. The user logs on but gets into a temporary profile thus he/she is unable to access her documents, pictures, etc. When you check the computer profiles, the status of the user's profile is "backup".

Solution: Edit the registry and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >>SOFTWARE >>MICROSOFT >>WINDOWS NT >>CURRENT VERSION >>PROFILE LIST>> search the profile under <>and delete the profile entry or just remove the .bak.

Close the registry editor then restart the computer.

Vista: The Case of the Disappearing Hard Drive Space

Issue: When you look at your hard drive properties in My Computer you will notice that your total Used Space is not equal to the total Size of all your folders and files on that drive then you begin to wonder where have all the rest of MBs went.

Answer: It went to Vista's System Restore feature! To check if this is actually the case, go to command prompt and type

vssadmin list shadowstorage

This will show you how much space System Restore has already used.

Solution: You need to set the maximum size that System Restore will use to resolve this issue.

To set the maximum size of System Restore, open the command prompt and type;

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=6GB

(the above example will limit the space for system restore to a maximum of 6GB)

How to Synchronize Mobile Devices and Desktop Computers with Synchronization Manager

Users of mobile devices such as laptop and notebook computers often need to synchronize their mobile devices with desktop computers. The Windows XP Synchronization Manager helps ensure that the files and folders on your mobile device and your desktop computer stay synchronized. With Synchronization Manager, you can be sure you are always working with the latest copy of your data, online or offline.

Synchronization Manager enables you to control when your offline files are synchronized with files on the network. You can have Synchronization Manager automatically synchronize the information that is available to you offline in a number of ways:

Every time you log on or off your computer, or both.
At specific intervals while your computer is idle.
At scheduled times.

Setting Up Your Computer to Use Offline Files

Open My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the Offline Files tab, make sure that the Enable Offline Files check box is selected.
Click to select the Synchronize all offline files before logging off check box to obtain a full synchronization, or do not click to select this check box if you want a quick synchronization.

Making Files and Folders Available Offline

Click Start, point to All Programs point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
Find the file or folder you want to work with offline, and then click the file to select it.
On the File menu, click Make Available Offline. Note that the Make Available Offline command exists on the File menu only if your computer is set up to use Offline Files.

Synchronizing Offline Items When You Log On or Off a Computer

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Synchronize to start Synchronization Manager.
Click Setup.
On the Logon/Logoff tab, click the network connection that you want to use in the When I am using this network connection box.
In the Synchronize the following checked items box, click to select the check boxes beside the offline files and folders that you want to synchronize.
Under Automatically synchronize the selected items, click either or both When I log on to my computer or When I log off my computer.
If you want Synchronization Manager to request permission before automatically synchronizing your offline items, click to select the Ask me before synchronizing the items check box.

Synchronizing Offline Items When Your Computer is Idle

Start Synchronization Manager.
Click Setup.
In the When I am using this network connection box, click the network connection that you want to use.
In the Synchronize the following checked items box, click to select the check boxes beside the offline files and folders that you want to synchronize.
Click to select the Synchronize the selected items while my computer is idle check box.

Scheduling Offline Items to Synchronize

Start Synchronization Manager.
Click Setup.
Click Add to start the Scheduled Synchronization Wizard, which assists you with the process of creating a synchronization schedule.

Configure Windows Firewall through GPO

In an Active Directory environment you can use Group Policy to configure Windows Firewall on your XP SP2 desktops. This involves two steps: first, update your existing Group Policy Objects (GPOs) with the new Windows Firewall policy settings found in the updated System.adm template included in XP SP2. This adds a new Windows Firewall folder under Network Connections in the Administrative Templates portion of Computer Configuration:

Once you’ve updated your GPOs, you can then configure Windows Firewall by making changes to the policy settings under Domain Profile (for XP SP2 machines joined to a domain) and Standard Profile (for machines in a workgroup).

Disable the Windows Firewall

To disable Windows Firewall on XP SP2 machines in a domain environment, set the following policy to Disabled:

Adding Bulk Users in MS Windows Server 2003 Active Directory using CSVDE command

First, you have to create a spreadsheet with the following headers on the columns; DN, objectclass, sAMAccountName, sn, givenName, userPrincipalName, displayName

DN - the value looks like this CN=Firstname Lastname,OU=OrgUnit,DC=yoursite,DC=com

objectclass - the value is "user"

sAMAccountName - this will be the log in name

sn - this is the lastname

givenName - this is the firstname

userPrincipalName - this is the login name suffixed with the domain name i.e. login@yoursite.com

displayName - this is the user's complete name

After completing the spreadsheet, Save it As a .csv file i.e. adusers.csv

Copy the adusers.csv to the domain controller. Click Start > Run > cmd, it should show the command prompt terminal window. To begin importing the data to Active Directory, type the following;

C:\> CSVDE -i -f adusers.csv

To check your new users, launch Active Directory Users and Computers and examine the Organizational Unit which you set as part of the DN. After each import, right click the OU and select Refresh from the short cut menu.

How to prevent folders from roaming with a profile in Windows Server 2003

A roaming-user profile is stored on a Windows Server 2003-based computer and is loaded on to the client workstation when the user logs on. This profile defines the Windows 2003 environment, and includes all user-specific settings such as program items, screen colors, and network and printer connections. When the user logs off the computer, the profile is copied to the server computer.

You can use a policy to prevent certain folders from being copied to the server when the user logs off the client computer.

Create a Group Policy Object

You can modify an existing Group Policy object (GPO) or create a new one. To create a new GPO:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
In the console tree, right-click your domain, and then click Properties.
Click the Group Policy tab, and then click New.
Type the name for this new policy such as Modify Roaming Profile, and then press ENTER.
Click the policy you just created, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
Click to clear the Apply Group Policy check box for the security groups that you want to prevent from having this policy applied.
Add the security principal (user or group) that you want the policy to apply to, click Read, and then click Apply Group Policy.
When you are finished, click OK.

Exclude Folders from Roaming Profiles

Edit the GPO to exclude specific folders in roaming profiles:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
In the console tree, right-click your domain, and then click Properties.
Click the Group Policy tab, click the GPO that you want to work with, and then click Edit.
Under User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand System, and then click User Profiles.
In the Setting list, double-click Exclude directories in roaming profile, and then click Enabled.
In the Prevent the following directories from roaming with the profile box, type the appropriate folder names, separated by semicolons (;).

Note By default, profiles are stored in the "Documents and Settings\user name" folder on the local computer, where user name is the name of the user to whom the profile belongs. This is considered as the "root" folder of the profile, and is not included when you specify folders to exclude. For example, to prevent the desktop from roaming with the profile, type desktop in the Prevent the following directories from roaming with the profile box. Make sure that a semicolon separates each entry in the list.
When you are finished not including folders from roaming profiles, click OK.
Quit the Group Policy snap-in, click Close, and then quit the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.

To configure an internal time server to synchronize with an external time source, follow these steps:

1. Change the server type to NTP. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Type

c. In the right pane, right-click Type, and then click Modify.
d. In Edit Value, type NTP in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Set AnnounceFlags to 5. To do this, follow these steps:
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\AnnounceFlags

a. In the right pane, right-click AnnounceFlags, and then click Modify.
b. In Edit DWORD Value, type 5 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Enable NTPServer. To do this, follow these steps:
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer

a. In the right pane, right-click Enabled, and then click Modify.
b. In Edit DWORD Value, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Specify the time sources. To do this, follow these steps:
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters

a. In the right pane, right-click NtpServer, and then click Modify.
b. In Edit Value, type Peers in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Note: Peers is a placeholder for a space-delimited list of peers from which your computer obtains time stamps. Each DNS name that is listed must be unique. You must append ,0x1 to the end of each DNS name. If you do not append ,0x1 to the end of each DNS name, the changes made in step 5 will not take effect.

Select the poll interval. To do this, follow these steps:
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient\SpecialPollInterval

a. In the right pane, right-click SpecialPollInterval, and then click Modify.
b. In Edit DWORD Value, type TimeInSeconds in the Value data box, and then click OK. Note TimeInSeconds is a placeholder for the number of seconds that you want between each poll. A recommended value is 900 Decimal. This value configures the Time Server to poll every 15 minutes.

Configure the time correction settings. To do this, follow these steps:
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\MaxPosPhaseCorrection

a. In the right pane, right-click MaxPosPhaseCorrection, and then click Modify.
b. In Edit DWORD Value, click to select Decimal in the Base box.
c. In Edit DWORD Value, type TimeInSeconds in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Note: TimeInSeconds is a placeholder for a reasonable value, such as 1 hour (3600) or 30 minutes (1800). The value that you select will depend upon the poll interval, network condition, and external time source.

d. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\MaxNegPhaseCorrection

e. In the right pane, right-click MaxNegPhaseCorrection, and then click Modify.
f. In Edit DWORD Value, click to select Decimal in the Base box.
g. In Edit DWORD Value, type TimeInSeconds in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Note: TimeInSeconds is a placeholder for a reasonable value, such as 1 hour (3600) or 30 minutes (1800). The value that you select will depend upon the poll interval, network condition, and external time source.

Quit Registry Editor.

At the command prompt, type the following command to restart the Windows Time service, and then press ENTER:

net stop w32time && net start w32time

GPO: Run program(s) at user logon

To create or modify the list of programs that start automatically when you log on to your computer, follow these steps:

1.	Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.
2.	On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
3.	Click Add.
4.	Under Available Stand-alone Snap-ins, click Group Policy Object Editor, click Add, and then click Finish. Note If you do not want to edit the Local Computer policy, click Browse to locate the Group Policy object that you want. Supply your user name and password if prompted, and then click Finish when you return to the Select Group Policy Object dialog box.
5.	Click Close, and then in the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, click OK.
6.	In the left pane of the Group Policy snap-in, expand Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, and then expand Administrative Templates.
7.	Expand the System object, click the Logon object, and then in the right-pane, double-click Run these programs at user logon.
8.	Click Enabled, and then click Show.
9.	Click Add, type the name of the executable program (.exe) file or document that you want, and then click OK. You must specify the path to the file unless it is located in the %Systemroot% folder.
10.	Repeat step 9 to add additional items to the Items to run at logon list.
11.	Click OK twice. The items that you added to the Items to run at logon list start automatically the next time that you log on to Windows on your computer. A list of these items is located in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run

How to remove "Customize your Settings" in IE7:

Click Start
Run and type the following into the Open box:
gpedit.msc
Click OK.

Using the left hand pane, navigate as follows:

User Configuration

Internet Explorer
In the right-hand side pane double-click on Prevent performance of First Run Customize settings
Change the setting for Prevent performance of First Run Customize settings to Enabled and use the drop-down box to select Go directly to home page
Click OK and close Group Policy
Run: gpupdate /force

Technical Issues: SATA and Ubuntu Server

After completing the installation process of Ubuntu Server 7.10 the computer restarted for its first boot then I got an error message that goes:

ata1.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40)

My computer got SATA HDD and DVD drives that's why I got this error.

Workaround

During the boot up process press "ESC" key to go to the boot menu. Edit the boot option that says:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=7eec31fb-03e9-40cd-861a-efe58a7aec56 ro quiet splash irqpoll <-- u need to add this "irqpoll"

Installing Moodle 1.8

On the command line, type:

cd /var/www

sudo wget http://download.moodle.org/stable18/moodle-latest-18.tgz

sudo tar –zxf moodle-latest-18.tgz

sudo mkdir /var/moodledata

sudo chown -R www-data.www-data /var/moodledata

sudo chmod 777 /var/www/moodle

We now need to edit the location of the default web site. On lines five and ten, replace /var/www/ with /var/www/moodle/. Restart Apache.

sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/default

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Configure Moodle website

ifconfig (look for your server’s ip address on the 2nd line)

On another computer open a web browser and put in your server address (http://moodleserverIP)

Go through the installation process.

Complete the Moodle install using a secure username and password.

Moodle is now ready to be customized!

Installing Webmin 1.4 for Ubuntu Server 7.10

On the command line, type:

cd /home (this is the location where you want to download the file)

sudo wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin-1.400.tar.gz

sudo tar –zxvf webmin-1.400.tar.gz

cd webmin-1.400

sudo sh setup.sh

In the setup screen, it will prompt you for file locations, just go for the default settings.

Config file directory [/etc/webmin]: 

Log file directory [/var/webmin]: 

Full path to perl (default /usr/bin/perl): 

Web server port (default 10000): 

Login name (default admin): 

Login password:

Password again:

Use SSL (y/n): y

Start webmin at boot time (y/n): y

You can login to Webmin thru your browser (IE or Firefox)
http://hostname:10000

Installing other software (recommended)

sudo apt-get install ntp-simple openssh-server unattended-upgrades

sudo apt-get install unzip zip aspell-en aspell-fr aspell-de aspell-es

sudo apt-get install curl libcurl3 libcurl3-dev php5-curl

sudo apt-get install clamav-base clamav-freshclam clamav

Press Y to continue the install after each of these apt-get commands.

The clamav package will support virus checking on file uploads into Moodle. May have to run it again to configure properly.

Additional languages are available for aspell.

Install Apache

Note: You don't have to do this procedure if you have already selected to install LAMP during the initial setup of Ubuntu Server 7.10

The following mod-security, ldap, and odbc libraries are optional but recommended.

sudo apt-get install apache2 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-gd

sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-security php5-ldap php5-odbc

Restart Apache

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Installing PostgreSQL

Note: You can either use MySQL or PostgreSQL so you only need to configure one.

At this point we'll need to log in again to the server and type:

sudo apt-get install postgresql-8.3 php5-pgsql

Press Y to continue the install. (You go directly to the step below if you have already installed PostgreSQL during the initial setup of Ubuntu Server 7.10)

We now need to create the database user 'moodle'.

sudo -u postgres createuser -D -A -P moodle

Enter in a NewMoodleDatabasePassword here, then answer 'N' to the question.

We now need to create the database 'moodle' for the user 'moodle'. You'll need to enter the password that you just created.

sudo -u postgres createdb -E utf8 -O moodle moodle

Let's now secure the postgresql database with an admin password.

sudo -u postgres psql template1
# ALTER USER postgres WITH PASSWORD 'NewAdminDatabasePassword';
# \q

Edit the file '/etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_hba.conf' and on line 79 change the words ident sameuser to md5.

sudo nano /etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_hba.conf

Restart the database so changes can take effect.

sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 restart

Installing MySQL

Note: You can either use MySQL or PostgreSQL so you only need to configure one.

At this point we'll need to log in again to the server and type:

sudo apt-get install mysql-server php5-mysqli

Press Y to continue the install.

(Go directly to the next step if you have already installed MySQL during the initial setup of Ubuntu Server 7.10)

Replace the following string NewRootDatabasePassword with a secure password of your own choosing.

There is no space between the -p and the password on the second command.

mysqladmin –u root password NewRootDatabasePassword

mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password NewRootDatabasePassword -pNewRootDatabasePassword

We now need to create the Moodle database and Moodle user in MySQL.

The mysql command will prompt for your NewRootDatabasePassword (from above). Replace NewMoodleDatabasePassword with a secure password of your own choosing.

mysql -u root -p
> CREATE DATABASE moodle;
> GRANT ALL ON moodle.* TO moodle@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'NewMoodleDatabasePassword';
> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
> QUIT

Preparing Ubuntu Server for Moodle installation

Edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file by typing "sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list" on the CLI. You will need to re-enter your account password when sudo asks for it.
Remove the # mark on deb and deb-src to enable access to the universe package source and universe security updates.
Now to get all the security updates by typing "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade" on the CLI.
Reboot to run on the new kernel by typing "sudo reboot"

Install Ubuntu Server 7.10

Download the Ubuntu Server 7.10 ISO file from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Burn the ISO file on a CD.
Start computer and use F12 to boot from CD.
Select Install to hard drive.
Select your language, country, and keyboard layout (i.e. English, United States, American English)
Select autoconfig or manually set the IP address if you have the details.
Enter your servername (i.e. moodle)
Select to manually edit the partition table if you know how otherwise just use the entire hard drive.
Select your timezone. (i.e. Central)
Set clock to Universal Time.
To install a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) and/or DNS (BIND) server, select either the LAMP or DNS options after the minimal installation is complete. You can also install PostgreSQL and Samba by ticking on the checkbox.
Enter Administrators full name. (i.e. Joe Smith)
Enter account name. (i.e. joesmith)
Enter a secure password.
Let the computer restart. (Remove the CD from the optical drive)
Log in to your account.
